Los Angeles!

The city of dreams. No other place in the world stands for opportunities like LA. The home of the stars. From Marilyn Monroe to Brad Pitt - Hollywood has always been a symbol of success. Despite this fame and glamour, the strong desire for freedom gave birth to a unique subculture.

Modern skateboarding emerged in the 1970s during a severe drought, when surfers began experimenting with riding skateboards in empty swimming pools. The “Zephyr Skateboarding Team” was formed by local teens and surf shop owners in the Venice Beach and Santa Monica areas. These two beach neighborhoods became known as Dogtown.

Since then, the sport of skateboarding developed into a global trend that became Olympic and inspires a whole generation. Nowadays, global players like “Louis Vuitton” and “Nike” include urban culture in their marketing and designs.

I accompanied the successors of the legendary “Dogtown” skaters for a few months and captured their everyday life in “Venice Beach Skatepark”.

ABOUT

About

Sebastian Th. Brune, born near Frankfurt, is the son of a German doctor with close ties to the US.

At seven, he began playing tennis and competing in local tournaments. By eleven, inspired by his father’s enthusiasm for the NBA, he developed an interest in basketball and joined a team at twelve. Excelling quickly, he attended sports boarding schools for top-tier training.

At eighteen, Sebastian faced a choice: competing at the highest level in Germany or joining a US college basketball program. A serious traffic accident halted his plans, leading him back to Germany, where he pursued professional basketball for a few seasons before shifting focus.

He later moved to Berlin to study marketing, discovered a passion for photography, and earned a Bachelor of Arts. Sebastian began his career as an Art Director for K1X, a German basketball brand, then joined DEF as a Creative Director before transitioning to freelance photography. Leveraging his connections, he quickly collaborated with major brands like VW and Nike.

His freelance work ignited an interest in filmmaking. While working as a photographer and videographer, he joined Daimler/Mercedes Benz as Creative Producer Global for ShareNow, where he wrote, directed, and produced commercials worldwide.

After ShareNow was sold, Sebastian became a self-employed director and photographer, working with brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma, and Cupra. Deeply connected to urban culture from a young age, his early experiences with skateboarding, rapping, and basketball continue to shape his authentic, creative vision.
